Full Incident Analysis Transcript

In this Rankiteo incident briefing, we review the WSO2 breach identified under incident ID WSO1789532611.

The analysis begins with a detailed overview of WSO2's information like the linkedin page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/wso2, the number of followers: 217495, the industry type: Software Development and the number of employees: 1291 employees

After the initial compromise, the video explains how Rankiteo's incident engine converts technical details into a normalized incident score. The incident score before the incident was 765 and after the incident was 760 with a difference of -5 which is could be a good indicator of the severity and impact of the incident.

In the next step of the video, we will analyze in more details the incident and the impact it had on WSO2 and their customers.

On 01 May 2023, WSO2 API Manager Customers disclosed Authentication Bypass issues under the banner "Critical WSO2 API Manager Vulnerability Exploited in the Wild".

Unidentified threat actors have begun exploiting CVE-2026-5430, a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in WSO2 API Manager, nearly five months after a patch was released.

The disruption is felt across the environment, affecting WSO2 API Manager (versions 4.1.0 through 4.6.0), API Control Plane, Traffic Manager, Universal Gateway, and exposing Consumer keys, secrets, internal service interactions, sensitive data in transit.

In response, and began remediation that includes Patch application (released in April 2023).

The case underscores how Ongoing, and recommending next steps like Apply the patch released in April 2023, monitor for unauthorized JWT token generation, and review API access logs for signs of lateral movement.

Finally, we try to match the incident with the MITRE ATT&CK framework to see if there is any correlation between the incident and the MITRE ATT&CK framework.

The MITRE ATT&CK framework is a knowledge base of techniques and sub-techniques that are used to describe the tactics and procedures of cyber adversaries. It is a powerful tool for understanding the threat landscape and for developing effective defense strategies.

MITRE ATT&CK® Correlation Analysis

Rankiteo's analysis has identified several MITRE ATT&CK tactics and techniques associated with this incident, each with varying levels of confidence based on available evidence. Under the Initial Access tactic, the analysis identified Exploit Public-Facing Application (T1190) with high confidence (90%), supported by evidence indicating exploiting CVE-2026-5430, a critical authentication bypass vulnerability. Under the Credential Access tactic, the analysis identified Credentials In Files (T1552.001) with moderate to high confidence (80%), supported by evidence indicating expose consumer keys, secrets, and internal service interactions and Use Alternate Authentication Material: Application Access Token (T1550.001) with high confidence (90%), supported by evidence indicating attackers to forge JWT tokens with administrator privileges. Under the Lateral Movement tactic, the analysis identified Use Alternate Authentication Material: Application Access Token (T1550.001) with moderate to high confidence (80%), supported by evidence indicating move laterally within compromised systems via forged JWT tokens and Remote Services: Cloud Services (T1021.007) with moderate to high confidence (70%), supported by evidence indicating full access to backend APIs, credentials, and sensitive data in transit. Under the Collection tactic, the analysis identified Data from Information Repositories (T1213) with moderate to high confidence (80%), supported by evidence indicating intercept API requests and access sensitive data in transit. Under the Exfiltration tactic, the analysis identified Exfiltration Over C2 Channel (T1041) with moderate to high confidence (70%), supported by evidence indicating potential undetected breaches in live environments. Under the Defense Evasion tactic, the analysis identified Use Alternate Authentication Material: Application Access Token (T1550.001) with moderate to high confidence (80%), supported by evidence indicating forge JWT tokens with administrator privileges. These correlations help security teams understand the attack chain and develop appropriate defensive measures based on the observed tactics and techniques.
