Venezia Bulk Transport Hit by Akira Ransomware Attack, Exposing 6,987 Individuals’ Data On January 9, 2026, Pennsylvania-based trucking and logistics firm Venezia Bulk Transport Inc. confirmed a data breach affecting 6,987 individuals across the U.S., including one resident of Maine. The incident stemmed from a ransomware attack claimed by the Akira ransomware group, which first disclosed the breach on the dark web on September 11, 2025, alleging the theft of 35GB of sensitive corporate data. The compromised information includes personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, medical certificates, passport details, and driver’s license numbers. Additionally, the attackers accessed financial and accounting files, payment details, client information, project data, and nondisclosure agreements (NDAs). According to Venezia’s disclosure to the Maine Attorney General, unauthorized access began on or around August 5, 2025, with attackers exfiltrating data before deploying ransomware. The breach went undetected until a forensic investigation and manual document review concluded in January 2026. In response, Venezia secured its network and engaged external cybersecurity experts to assess the incident. The company began notifying affected individuals in writing on January 22, 2026, offering complimentary credit monitoring, reports, and fraud assistance through Cyberscout (a TransUnion company) for several months. The services include proactive fraud alerts and identity theft support. Venezia’s notice also advised impacted individuals to monitor financial accounts, review credit reports, and consider placing fraud alerts or security freezes on their credit files. Those concerned about medical identity theft were urged to scrutinize health insurance statements for suspicious activity.
