UNI402070325
Jeffrey Smith, a D.C. police officer, was beaten and injured during the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021. The traumatic event led to significant changes in his personality and demeanor, ultimately resulting in his death by suicide. Erin Smith, his widow, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against David Walls-Kaufman, who was involved in the assault. The lawsuit resulted in a $500,000 payment to Smith's estate. Smith's death was later officially designated as a 'line of duty' death, and his widow is advocating for his name to be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
