While ransomware typically locks victims out of their data until payment is made, sources revealed that Media Prima refused to pay the ransom, opting instead to migrate its email system to Google’s G Suite as a workaround. It remains unclear whether the attack resulted in data breaches or financial losses, and no police report had been filed at the time of reporting. The incident reflects a growing trend of ransomware attacks leveraging cryptocurrency for anonymous payments, targeting organizations across industries. Media Prima, which reported a net loss of RM650.6 million in 2017, has not disclosed the full impact of the disruption on its operations.
