Tectonic Crypto Platform Hit by $6M Exploit After Price Manipulation Attack Over the weekend, decentralized lending platform Tectonic suffered a $6 million theft after an attacker artificially inflated the price of its Tonic coin by over 100 times in just 20 minutes. Using the manipulated tokens as collateral, the fraudster attempted to borrow assets worth an estimated $74 million, though most funds were blocked. The Cronos blockchain, which hosts Tectonic, halted operations to prevent further outflows, freezing $68 million still on the platform. Crypto.com, the company behind Cronos, confirmed its platform remained unaffected but assisted in the investigation. By Monday, Cronos had restored its system to a pre-attack state, effectively reversing the frozen funds though the $6 million already stolen remains unrecovered. Tectonic plans to reopen in phases, initially allowing withdrawals while keeping borrowing and deposits paused. A full postmortem report is expected later. The identity of the attacker remains unknown. Security experts, including TRM Labs, noted the attack mirrors the 2022 Mango Markets exploit, where a trader manipulated token prices to siphon funds before being arrested. Such market manipulation attacks are rising, accounting for one in eight crypto hacks this year up from one in 17 in 2022. The vulnerability lies in how protocols value collateral, according to TRM Labs’ Ari Redbord. The incident follows a similar $8.7 million exploit on Moonwell earlier this week, underscoring growing risks in decentralized finance.
