The Salt Lake City School District serves the children and community of Utah’s capitol city. The boundaries for the district are contiguous with the boundaries of Salt Lake City. Our Schools There are 36 schools in the district: 27 elementary schools, 5 middle schools, 3 high schools and one alternative high school. In May 1999, voters in Salt Lake City overwhelmingly approved issuing $136 million in bonds to help pay for the renovation or reconstruction of elementary and middle schools. Ethnic minorities make up 53% of our students, and the district serves a significant refugee population from Eastern European or African countries. Approximately 60% of our students come from low-income families, and just over 33% of them are learning English as a second language. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), located in Northern Virginia, is the nation’s 9th largest public school system, serves a diverse population of more than 180,000 students in grades prekindergarten through 12.
