Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center Bolsters Cybersecurity After 2023 Incident
Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center, a nonprofit serving uninsured and underinsured patients in Virginia’s Greater Williamsburg region, has completed a major technology overhaul following a cybersecurity incident last year. The upgrades funded by a $150,000 community-driven campaign aim to secure patient data, streamline care coordination, and improve the overall patient experience.
The center launched its fundraising effort in November, extending through Giving Tuesday and year-end donations. Key contributors included TowneBank, the Langley Foundation, and Langley Federal Credit Union, alongside nearly 60 individual donors. Installation of the new systems began this winter, with officials confirming the enhancements will fortify defenses against future disruptions while maintaining critical services.
Olde Towne, which operates on a sliding-scale payment model and turns no one away for inability to pay, identified the upgrades as essential to safeguarding operations after last year’s incident. CEO Aaron Thompson emphasized the community’s role in supporting the effort, stating, “This campaign reflects the commitment of our community to protecting and advancing access to care.” The improvements are now in place to better protect sensitive information and ensure continuity of care.
