Cyberattack Exposes Sensitive Inmate Data from U.S. Jail Systems A hacking group known as Breach Boyz World Wide recently exposed a major security breach involving nearly 30 inmates at a U.S. county jail, leaking sensitive personal data including Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, and home addresses. The group sent an email to a local news outlet with the subject line "Please notify the jail of bad Wi-Fi," along with the stolen records. One of the affected individuals, identified as Caitlyn, confirmed the accuracy of the leaked data, revealing her husband’s information was among those compromised. She also expressed concern after learning her own details might be included, as she had been released from the same jail just a day prior. The Sheriff’s office acknowledged the breach, stating they were taking steps to prevent further unauthorized access and had notified the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI). When contacted, the hackers who claimed to operate from northern Iran provided details of their methods. They described a "war driving" attack, where an operative entered the jail’s parking lot with specialized Wi-Fi mapping equipment, capturing data within two hours while rotating vehicles to avoid suspicion. The group, which claims a team of 32 members, stated they have breached 134 jail and Department of Corrections (DOC) systems across the U.S. Unlike typical ransomware attacks, they did not demand payment, citing a desire to protect inmates’ reputations. However, they admitted to profiting from selling similar data to governments and brokers on the dark web, with a claimed inventory of over 1.2 million Social Security numbers from jail hacks alone. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in correctional facility cybersecurity, with attackers exploiting weak Wi-Fi networks to extract sensitive information at scale.
