In December 2024, Neda Maritime, a leading Greek ship management company, fell victim to a targeted cyberattack by the Blackout ransomware group. The attackers successfully exfiltrated approximately 150GB of sensitive data, including critical shipping logs and crew information, before encrypting the company’s systems and destroying backups to prevent recovery. The ransomware group then issued an ultimatum, threatening to publicly release the stolen data unless a ransom was paid by December 23, 2024. The breach not only compromised operational and personnel data but also posed severe risks to the company’s continuity, as the destruction of backups left Neda Maritime with limited options for restoring encrypted systems. The attack underscored the growing threat of double-extortion ransomware in the maritime sector, where sensitive logistical and employee data are prime targets for cybercriminals seeking financial gain through coercion.
