General Data Breach Advisory for Consumers

Data Breach Surge Highlights Growing Cybersecurity Risks for Consumers The rise of digital payments—from chip-enabled cards to mobile wallets—has streamlined transactions but also expanded exposure to data breaches. According to cybersecurity firm Huntress, breach notifications surged 211% between 2023 and 2024, exceeding 1.3 billion incidents this year alone. With personal and financial data increasingly targeted, consumers must act swiftly if notified of a breach. A data breach occurs when unauthorized parties access sensitive information, such as names, email addresses, Social Security numbers, or financial details. The severity of the risk depends on the type of data exposed: while stolen emails may lead to phishing attempts, compromised Social Security numbers can enable identity theft or credit fraud. If affected, experts recommend immediate steps to mitigate damage: 1. Identify Exposed Data – Review the breach notification to determine what information was compromised, as this dictates the level of risk. Commonly stolen data includes full names, birthdates, passwords, and biometric or health records. 2. Secure Accounts – Update passwords and PINs for all financial and online accounts, ensuring each has a unique, strong password. Password managers can generate and store complex credentials, while two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring verification codes. 3. Monitor Financial Activity – Regularly check bank and credit accounts for unauthorized transactions. Free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com (covering Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) can reveal fraudulent accounts or loans. Some companies offer free credit monitoring post-breach—affected individuals should confirm eligibility. 4. Place Fraud Alerts – A fraud alert notifies lenders to verify identity before approving credit applications. Placing an alert with one bureau automatically extends it to the other two, lasting one year (or up to seven years for extended alerts). 5. Freeze or Lock Credit – A security freeze restricts access to credit reports, requiring manual unfreezing for legitimate applications. While free, it must be set up separately with each bureau. Alternatively, credit locks (often paid services) offer similar protection with easier toggling. 6. Lock Social Security Numbers – The SSA’s Self-Lock service (via E-Verify.gov) prevents unauthorized use of a Social Security number for employment or identity changes, though it must be unlocked for job applications. Despite these precautions, breached data may still fuel phishing scams or dark web sales. Rapid response remains critical to limiting long-term damage. The escalating frequency of breaches underscores the persistent threat to consumer data in an increasingly digital economy.
