The Social Security numbers and dates of birth of Katy ISD workers were accidentally disclosed, according to the district. The school district said that it had no proof that anyone had accessed the data of its staff members who were still employed at the end of the 2017–2018 academic year. Officials claim that the details were distributed in response to a typical request for a personnel list. That data was included in a file, which according to Katy ISD was deleted as soon as it was found. As part of its proactive protection measures, Katy ISD has given all of the staff members who were directly touched by the incident a year of credit monitoring services at no cost.

Katy Independent School District in Texas suffered a data security breach after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent misplaced a portable flash drive containing its personal data. The flash drive continued personal information including names, mailing addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of 11,658 employees. Katy ISD along with IRS investigated the incident and asked for recovery costs from the IRS for credit monitoring services it has retained for the affected employees
