Hachette Australia: Cyber attack targeting Hachette Australia subsidiary hurts bookshops and authors

Cyber Attack Disrupts Australia’s Book Distribution Ahead of Peak Season A cyber attack on Alliance Distribution Services (ADS), the distribution arm of Hachette Australia, has severely disrupted book supplies across the country, leaving independent bookstores and authors scrambling in the lead-up to the critical Christmas trading period. The unauthorized activity on ADS’s systems was detected on July 18, halting the distribution of Hachette-published titles. While new releases have been prioritized, backlist titles books already on the market remain in short supply. Jaye Chin-Dusting, owner of Melbourne’s Mary Martin Bookshop, reported receiving only 15–20% of her usual stock, forcing her to consider alternative suppliers at higher costs. Authors have also been hit hard. Danielle Binks, whose new book Shakespeare in the Orchard launched last month, faces uncertainty over her upcoming school visits in Adelaide, as Hachette cannot guarantee stock availability. Maxine Beneba Clarke, another Hachette author, warned on social media that the attack could result in long-term income losses for writers and emerging authors. Hachette acknowledged the disruption in a statement, confirming efforts to restore systems but offering no timeline for full recovery. While the company has suggested booksellers source stock from other retailers like Booktopia or international suppliers, the added freight costs strain smaller businesses. Independent stores, unlike major retailers, lack the resources to absorb these expenses, raising concerns about their survival if the outage persists. Cybersecurity experts, including RMIT’s Matthew Warren, suspect a ransomware attack either targeting ADS directly or aiming to disrupt the broader supply chain. Warren warned that AI-driven cyber threats are increasing, making such incidents more frequent. He emphasized the need for businesses to bolster cybersecurity defenses to mitigate future risks. With Rebecca Yarros’s highly anticipated Threshing Day set for release in September, booksellers fear further shortages if operations aren’t restored soon. The attack has exposed vulnerabilities in Australia’s publishing supply chain, leaving authors, retailers, and readers in limbo as the industry’s busiest season approaches.
