Cyberattack on Japanese Logistics Firm Disrupts Major Food Chains A cyberattack on Japan’s leading frozen food supplier, Nichirei, has caused widespread shipment delays across multiple major brands, including Ezaki Glico, KFC Japan, and Kura Sushi. The incident, disclosed on July 15, disrupted refrigerated warehouse operations, affecting deliveries of ice cream, sushi ingredients, and other perishable goods. Ezaki Glico, the maker of Pocky snacks, reported that up to 20% of its ice cream products faced delays, particularly in western Japan, where demand surges amid record summer heat. The company has shifted to alternative supply routes to mitigate disruptions. Kura Sushi, with nearly 700 locations, confirmed shipment delays in western regions, while KFC Japan warned of potential menu shortages and temporary store closures. Nichirei, which operates Japan’s largest refrigerated logistics network, stated that services would gradually resume starting July 17. The attack has also impacted supermarkets, pastry manufacturers, and eldercare dining facilities, according to local media. This incident follows a pattern of cyberattacks targeting Japanese supply chains, including a 2025 ransomware attack on Asahi Breweries by the Russia-linked group Qilin and a 2023 breach at Muji’s delivery partner, Askul. Government spokesman Minoru Kihara emphasized the need for companies to strengthen cybersecurity measures in response to the latest disruption.
