In July 2023, the Port of Nagoya, Japan’s busiest port and a critical hub for car exports, fell victim to a ransomware attack orchestrated by the LockBit group. The cyberattack targeted the port’s computer systems managing shipping containers, forcing a two-day shutdown of container reception operations. As Nagoya plays a pivotal role in Japan’s economy—handling a significant portion of the country’s automotive and industrial exports—the disruption had cascading effects on supply chains, delaying shipments and potentially incurring financial losses for businesses reliant on the port’s operations. The attack underscored the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber threats, particularly those orchestrated by sophisticated ransomware groups. While the port resumed partial operations after 48 hours, the incident highlighted the strategic risk posed by cyberattacks on economic lifelines, raising concerns about long-term resilience against such threats.
