Fort Smith Museum Of History
Fort Smith Museum Of History is a museum based out of 320 Rogers Ave, Fort Smith, AR, United States. The mission of the Fort Smith Museum of History, FSMH, is to collect, preserve, and share the history and culture of Fort Smith and the surrounding five-county region. Charitable donations help us continue museum operations and educational and community programs. The Fort Smith Museum of History is a 501 (c) (3) organization supported fully through memberships, private donations, estate giving, state and private grants, and foundation gifts. The United Way does not fund the FSMH, nor are we recipients of federal dollars. The Museum was established in 1910 as The Old Fort Commissary Museum with the purpose of saving the city’s oldest building from demolition, the Commissary from the second Fort Smith. Mission accomplished, that building was restored and is now part of The Fort Smith Historic Site. The Fort Smith Museum of History is the city’s oldest museum, and research indicates, the oldest, continually operating museum in the state of Arkansas. Our mission means we house approximately 40,000 artifacts chronicling the city’s history, as well as care for the 1906 Atkinson-Williams Warehouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which houses the Museum.
