Decisivo per i destini della Casa Editrice è, nel dicembre 1901, l’incontro con Benedetto Croce, che tracciò nel giro di pochi mesi quella che di fatto è stata, ed è ancora oggi, la «mappa genetica» della Laterza; fu lui, nel giugno del 1902, ad invitare chiaramente Giovanni Laterza ad abbandonare il progetto di pubblicare opere letterarie: «per comparire come editore con una fisionomia determinata: ossia come editore di libri politici, storici, di storia artistica, di filosofia, ecc.: editore di roba grave». Le linee editoriali attuali danno forza al settore dell’editoria formativa, da un lato, e, dall’altro, selezionano un’offerta significativa di saggistica in grado di raggiungere il largo pubblico. I cambiamenti più significativi degli ultimi anni appartengono alla moltiplicazione dei canali attraverso i quali la Casa Editrice valorizza il catalogo ed esprime la propria competenza – maturata in più di 120 anni di storia – nel selezionare e intermediare contenuti di qualità.
