In November 2021, Danaos Management Consultants, a Piraeus-based (Greater Athens, Greece) firm, fell victim to a ransomware attack targeting its communication systems. The incident primarily disrupted operations for multiple Greek shipping companies—its clients—rendering them unable to communicate with critical business partners. The attack resulted in the loss of important internal files, while less than 10% of external customer data was encrypted.The company responded by issuing urgent instructions to clients, advising them to back up essential files to mitigate further damage. Although the breach did not lead to a large-scale customer data leak, the operational disruption and partial encryption of client files posed financial and reputational risks, particularly within the maritime sector, where seamless communication and data integrity are vital. The attack underscored vulnerabilities in Danaos’ cybersecurity infrastructure, exposing gaps in both preventive measures and incident response.
