In late December 2020, Atrium Windows and Doors, Inc. experienced a data breach that exposed the personal information of 12 Maine residents, including their names and Social Security numbers (SSNs). The incident was reported to the Maine Attorney General’s Office on April 21, 2021. While the breach was limited in scale, the exposure of SSNs—a highly sensitive identifier—poses significant risks, including identity theft, financial fraud, and long-term reputational harm to affected individuals. In response, Atrium implemented enhanced security measures to prevent future incidents and offered the impacted residents a free one-year credit monitoring service to mitigate potential fraud. The breach did not involve ransomware, large-scale customer data leaks, or operational disruptions, but the compromise of SSNs elevates its severity due to the high sensitivity of the exposed data and the potential for severe financial and personal consequences for the victims.
