Urbanity Dance is a nonprofit arts organization that exists to inspire, engage, and empower individuals and communities through the art of dance and movement. Founded by Director Betsi Graves, Urbanity Dance was created in 2011 in the spirit of three goals: 1) to propel contemporary dance to the forefront of Boston’s cultural landscape; 2) to serve an unmet demand for access to affordable and accessible dance training; and 3) to leverage dance as tool to foster bodily autonomy and creativity in local schools and community spaces. Through three interconnected pillars of Company, School, and Community, the organization offers a resilient, powerful community platform that builds synergy, investment, and connection. Together, the Company, School, and Community programs create an interwoven network that provides high-quality art experiences to students of all ages and backgrounds, as well as paid opportunities for all professional dancers, dancemakers, artistic collaborators and teachers, that serve Urbanity’s mission, its South End neighborhood in Boston, and the city at large.

Great stories can change the way people think about the world around them. Wakakirri is the search for the most inspirational Story-Dance created by an Australian school. Does your school have a story to tell? Established in 1992, Wakakirri is Australia's largest Performing Arts festival for schools, involving over 20,000 students across every State and Territory each year. A Wakakirri Story Dance is a 3-7 minute performance that theatrically tells a story using any combination of dance, creative movement and acting to pre-recorded music. Schools can tell any story in any way they wish. All sets, props and costumes should be well utilised and not gratuitous. All schools are encouraged to minimise their environmental footprint. Participating in Wakakirri is an experience students never forget. After rehearsals schools perform in a professional theatre, under full lights and sound to an audience of family, friends and the official Wakakirri National Search Panel. Every schools' performance is filmed for Waka TV and the People's Choice Awards. The process of creating a performance for Wakakirri covers many areas of the National Curriculum. Principals and teachers report Wakakirri builds teamwork, community pride, life skills and resilience. Of course, if you ask students, they say it's just loads of fun! Wakakirri is a creative challenge that is accessible and affordable for every school in Australia. Schools can create their own Story Dances or use the Best Start Program if they need additional instructor support. Wakakirri stories reach over 3 million people each year via live performances, Waka TV, People's Choice Awards and social media. - General Information - Wakakirri's Major Partners are: Victorian Government, Youth Central, Muffin Break, Reconciliation Australia and Bully Zero Australia Foundation.
