Wir, die Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft e.V. (DLRG), sind mit über 1,9 Millionen Mitgliedern und Förderern die größte Wasserrettungsorganisation der Welt. Seit unserer Gründung im Jahr 1913 haben wir es uns zur Aufgabe gemacht, Menschen vor dem Ertrinken zu bewahren. Schirmherr ist Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Die DLRG ist die Nummer Eins in der Schwimm- und Rettungsschwimmausbildung in Deutschland. Von 1950 bis zum Jahr 2019 haben wir rund 22,7 Millionen Schwimmprüfungen und fast fünf Millionen Rettungsschwimmprüfungen abgenommen. In rund 2.000 örtlichen Gliederungen leisten unsere ehrenamtlichen Helfer pro Jahr fast 10,2 Millionen Stunden freiwillige Arbeit für die Menschen in Deutschland. Rund 47.000 Mitglieder wachen jährlich etwa drei Millionen Stunden über die Sicherheit von Badegästen und Wassersportlern. Zu unseren Kernaufgaben gehören Schwimm- und Rettungsschwimmausbildung, Aufklärung über Wassergefahren und Wasserrettungsdienst. Gegründet wurde sie am 19. Oktober 1913 in Leipzig als Konsequenz aus einem schweren Unglück in Binz auf Rügen, bei dem ein Steg einstürzte und 14 Menschen ertranken, zwei Frauen starben an den Folgen des Sturzes in die See. Seit damals ist es das Hauptziel der DLRG, Menschen vor dem Ertrinkungstod zu bewahren, indem sie möglichst vielen Menschen frühzeitig das Schwimmen beibringt und über das sichere Verhalten im und am Wasser aufklärt. Rettungsschwimmer der DLRG bewachen jedes Jahr die Küsten von Nord- und Ostsee, Badeeinrichtungen in den Binnengewässern und Flüssen, Schwimmbäder und Veranstaltungen am, auf und im Wasser. Die DLRG ist darüber hinaus im Katastrophenschutz der Länder und je nach Ländergesetzgebung im Rettungsdienst tätig. Der auf das Wasser spähende Adler ist das Logo der DLRG und als Markenzeichen ebenso wie die Wortmarke „DLRG“ nach dem Markenrecht im geschäftlichen Gebrauch geschützt.
