В феврале 2012 года открылся первый и единственный в России театр, посвященный жанру мюзикла. Свой дом театр обрел в отреставрированном здании Дворца культуры имени С.П. Горбунова, на знаменитой «Горбушке». Переоборудованный зал на 1200 мест, новые удобные кресла, большие светлые холлы, уютные кафе и бары, просторный кассовый вестибюль, удобная парковка — этим не может похвастаться больше ни один зал на западе Москвы. «Мы решили соединить российскую традицию репертуарного театра с бродвейским принципом ежедневного проката, — говорит художественный руководитель Театра мюзикла Михаил Швыдкой. — В афише Театра будет три-четыре названия, — как отечественных, так и зарубежных, — каждое из которых мы будем играть подряд по 7–10 дней в месяц». Свой первый сезон Театр мюзикла открыл постановкой «Времена не выбирают», либретто которой написано Михаилом Швыдким в соавторстве с Алексеем Кортневым. Работа над этим проектом началась еще летом 2010 года в Нью-Йорке, в Центре искусств Михаила Барышникова. Следующей премьерой стал мюзикл «Растратчики» по пьесе Валентина Катаева. Авторами постановки выступили Максим Леонидов и Александр Шаврин. Премьера нового сезона 2013-2014 — музыкальное ревю «Жизнь прекрасна!». Театр решил создать уникальное сценическое действо, где зритель сможет услышать музыку самых разнообразных жанров и стилей – романс и рок-н-ролл, лирическую балладу и танцевальный хит, арию из оперетты и советскую патриотическую песню. В творческих планах театра — как лучшие мировые мюзиклы, ставшие классикой, так и новые постановки по произведениям отечественных авторов.
