Stephen Joseph Theatre is an independent theatre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Our home is a beautifully-restored 1930s Odeon which houses our famous theatre-in-the-round which was the first of its kind in the world. The Round provides a truly unique experience as the audience is seated all around the stage. Not only does the audience see the performance from every angle, it also brings the actor into the same space as the audience. As our founder, director Stephen Joseph, said in 1959: "Let’s have the actors in the same room as the audience, let’s have four front rows, let’s get really excited about this acting business!" We produce theatre year round in our beautiful in-the-round auditorium (400 seats) and our end-on theatre The McCarthy (160 seats). You can see everything from musicals to brand new plays. We also screen films in the McCarthy most nights of the week. We run an extensive Creative Engagment programme with our local community and around the Borough of Scarborough.
