Australian Institute of International Affairs

Stephen House, Deakin, 2600, AU
Last Update: 2025-12-02

The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) seeks to promote interest in and understanding of international affairs in Australia. It is consistently voted Australia’s “Best Independent Think Tank” and is currently Australia's top think tank in the worldwide rankings according to the University of Pennsylvania's Global Go To Think Tank Index. The institute provides a forum for discussion and debate, but does not seek to formulate its own institutional views. It arranges close to 200 lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences and other discussions each year, and sponsors research and publications. Formed in 1924, the AIIA was originally associated with the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House). It was established as a federal body in 1933 and is now the only nationwide organisation of its kind in Australia. It is financed by members’ contributions, a small government subvention and tax deductible donations from individuals and businesses. The AIIA consists of independent branches located in seven Australian States and Territories (see the showcase pages), and a National Office in Canberra. Close contact is maintained with Chatham House and with similarly minded organisations around the world. Precluded by its constitution from expressing any opinion of its own on international affairs, the AIIA provides a national forum for the presentation and discussion of a wide range of views.
