Bardavon 1869 Opera House, Inc. is a NYS nonprofit corporation that owns and operates two National Register theaters and the region’s orchestra. The 944-seat Bardavon in Poughkeepsie is the state's oldest continuously operating theater and one of the US’s oldest. The 1500-seat Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC) in Kingston was built in 1927. The Bardavon acquired the Hudson Valley Philharmonic in 1999 (now in its 51st season), and merged UPAC into our operation in 2007. The Bardavon consistently presents quality music/dance/theater/classic films in both venues. Since 1994 the Bardavon has united artists, businesses, and government to produce outdoor events that draw thousands of residents and visitors to the region annually, providing free access to superb art as a source of community pride, urban revitalization and cultural tourism. Our Education Program partners with regional schools on both sides of the river to offer unique arts-based learning for students and innovative tools for teachers. The continued restoration and preservation our landmark theaters are also a vital aspect of our mission.

Big Apple Circus

235 Park Avenue, New York, 10003, US
Last Update: 2025-12-11

On July 18, 1977, Paul Binder and Michael Christensen founded the Big Apple Circus with its first performance in Battery Park City. They had recently returned from a street performing tour of Europe where they had been invited to participate in Annie Fratellini’s first production of her Nouveau Cirque in Dijon in the summer of 1975. German-based Circus-Theater Roncalli was founded in 1976 by Bernhard Paul and Andre Heller and comes from the same one-ring, traditional Nouveau Cirque style. Since 1981, Lincoln Center has been home to the Big Apple Circus. Here, in 1988, the Big Apple Circus first introduced New Yorkers to China’s modern circus tradition with The Big Apple Circus Meets the Monkey King, and, in 1994, welcomed the famous Swiss mime group in Grandma Meets Mummenschanz. This year, we welcome Circus-Theater Roncalli for its U.S. premier and a collaboration on an all new show, Journey to the Rainbow. Join us under the Big Top through January 15th, 2024!
